Airbus C295 Soars High, as Orders Reach 300

The Airbus C295 medium tactical transport aircraft has achieved 300 orders, spanning across diverse terrains from the Pacific Ocean to the Arabian desert, the tropical jungles, and the Sahel. This success marks a significant triumph for the European and Spanish aerospace industry.

The C295 is a robust, versatile tactical transport, ideal for troop and cargo transport, maritime patrol, surveillance, reconnaissance, signals intelligence, close air support, medical evacuation, VIP transport, and airborne firefighting.

It is capable of carrying up to nine tonnes of payload or as many as 71 troops at a maximum cruise speed of 260 kts. Adding to its flexibility is the capability of being equipped for the air-to-air refuelling of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

Fitted with a retractable landing gear and featuring an unobstructed 12.69-metre-long pressurised cabin, it cruises at altitudes up to 30,000 ft., while retaining excellent low-level flight characteristics. It has noteworthy short take-off & landing (STOL) performance from unpaved, soft, and sandy/grass airstrips.

The C295 is propelled by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines, delivering exceptional manoeuvrability, impressive hot-and-high performance, and fuel efficiency for extended endurance of up to 13 hours in flight.

With more than 200 aircraft in operation, it has an outstanding track record of reliability, demonstrating daily its worth as a highly efficient workhorse.

Multitasking Hero
Developed by Airbus Defence and Space, the Fully Integrated Tactical System (FITS) serves as the core mission system for the C295, supporting a diverse array of tasks including anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare (ASW/ASuW), search and rescue (SAR), maritime patrol, signals intelligence, and environmental protection.

FITS comprises networked computers and displays that deliver processed information directly to crews, streamlining mission execution. In surveillance operations, FITS not only collects data from sophisticated sensors but also intelligently processes and presents it, enhancing crew decision-making.

This modular and adaptable system streamlines data collection, classification, and display, minimising crew workload and maximising operational efficiency.
The system includes multi-function crew consoles connected to central processors via a high-speed local area network (LAN), alongside ground-based support centres for mission analysis and training.

Configurations range from two consoles for Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) to five consoles for maritime patrol (MPA), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and signals intelligence (SIGINT) missions.

Integrated sensors cover radar, electro-optic/infrared (EO/IR), acoustics, magnetic anomaly detection (MAD), automatic identification system (AIS), identification friend or foe (IFF) interrogator, and communications and electronic intelligence (COMINT/ELINT), among others.

FITS is compatible with navigation and communication systems, including VHF/UHF/HF radios, satellite communications (SATCOM), and high-frequency Link 11 and Link 16 datalinks.

In ASW roles, it manages sonobuoy and armament inventory, along with launch pattern control. FITS’ flexibility accommodates future sensor integration and additional consoles, ensuring compatibility with evolving technological and operational needs, including the C295’s Airborne Early Warning (AEW) version.

Stats that Impress
Here are some captivating facts and figures about the aircraft:
Right from its inception with the Spanish Air and Space Force in 1999, the C295 has solidified its position as a market leader in the medium tactical transport category, boasting over 80 per cent of the market share. Currently, it serves 41 operators across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, with India emerging as its largest customer, acquiring 56 units.

With a remarkable 610,000 flight hours amassed among operators, the aircraft stands as a versatile workhorse in various configurations, from transport to maritime patrol and surveillance.

At the core of its capabilities lies FITS, developed by Airbus Defence and Space, enabling it to seamlessly adapt to roles ranging from anti-submarine warfare to search and rescue and environmental protection. Production, maintenance, and training occur within Airbus facilities, with ongoing expansion, such as the construction of a new Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Vadodara, India, showcasing its commitment to meeting global demand.

Humanitarian Missions
Beyond its military applications, the C295 demonstrates versatility in humanitarian missions, such as medical evacuation during crises like Cyclone Idai, supporting firefighting efforts, and transporting humanitarian aid. The aircraft’s ability to operate on up to 50 per cent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) aligns with military aviation decarbonisation goals.

With its reliability, adaptability, and global success, the Airbus C295 continues to play a pivotal role in various demanding deployments, contributing significantly to military and humanitarian operations worldwide.
